Torque Multiplier

Torque Multiplier GEN-2

An earlier version of a fully mechanical multiplier had been developed by Envirex back in 2014. Now it was time to bump the revision to include torque feedback, rotational counter, directional indication, display, and data storage. Still as a standalone unit without need of hook up to ROV while subsea. The challenge was therefore not to fully change the base functions of the torque multiplier itself. The objective was to integrate feedback, logging and display functionality without changing the way the tool was deployed and operated subsea.

Torque Multiplier

A standalone tool

The team needed a way of displaying information to the operator, storing operational data, and powering the system during subsea operations. At the same time, the tool had to remain compact and easy to handle through an ROV manipulator.

The final solution incorporated a battery-powered display capable of providing both torque and turns feedback during operation. Internal memory was added to store operational data, allowing information to be exported once the tool is returned to the surface.
This made it possible to document torque values, rotational direction and operation history without introducing external communication systems or additional support equipment.
The display itself was designed around practical offshore use. To minimize power consumption, it remains in a low-power state until activated, extending operational life while reducing battery requirements.

The system remains a fully self-contained intervention tool that can be stored in a basket, retrieved by an ROV when required and returned once the operation has been completed.

Because the tool does not rely on hydraulic or electrical interfaces from the vehicle, operators do not need to manage additional hoses, cables or project-specific integration during deployment. Torque multiplication, feedback, and logging are all contained within a single standalone unit.

An adjustable clutch mechanism was also integrated into the design, allowing torque settings to be modified subsea according to operational requirements.

Torque Multiplier

Supporting rental operations

Many of the characteristics that shaped Torque Multiplier Gen-2 later proved equally valuable in a rental environment.

Because the tool is self-contained and requires very little project-specific integration, it can be mobilized quickly and deployed across a broad range of intervention scopes. Operators gain access to torque multiplication, feedback, and logging functionality without requiring dedicated support systems or permanent ownership of the equipment.

The ability to retrieve and review operational data after completion also provides an additional level of traceability compared to relying solely on operator observations.

Today, the system forms part of Envirent’s rental fleet, where it continues to support valve operations, connector operations, and other subsea intervention activities.

About:

Torque multiplier Gen-2 is built around a gearbox ratio of approximately 1:5, multiplying a typical ROV manipulator output of 180-200 Nm into around 1000 Nm of available output torque. It also features a Class 1-4 torque interface, making it compatible with a wide range of subsea valves and intervention systems.
